Inscription.
This building was home to the first bank in Clawson, the Clawson State Savings Bank. When first opened in 1925, it was a marvel of technological advancement. Touted as impervious to robberies and fire, it featured bullet proof glass on the cashiers cages, steel doors on all safes, electronically operated alarms and timers on the concrete-reinforced vault, and gun loops for the cashiers.

These safeguards were never tested, however, as no attempt was ever made to rob this bank.

The original vault still remains in the basement.

During the Depression, Clawson State Savings bank managed to avoid closure for several months while many other banks closed their doors. It was finally forced to close in May 1933, when nervous depositors lined up outside and demanded their cash. All customers did eventually receive the funds they had on deposit.

The building was later used as a restaurant, and was home to the Wayne Oakland Bank shown left in 1947.
