1. The Battle of Concepción Marker

Inscription. Having Lost The Opening Skirmishes of the Texas Revolution at Gonzales and Goliad, the Mexican Army in Texas consolidated in San Antonio in October 1835. Texan troops also advanced to San Antonio and camped on the outskirts of town. On the morning of October 28, the Mexican Army engaged the Texans near Mission Concepción east of the confluence of the San Antonio River and San Pedro Creek. The river's wooded banks and foggy conditions provided cover for the Texans who inflicted over fifty casualties on the Mexican Army during the thirty minute battle. The Battle of Concepción, as it became known, was the first encounter of the siege that ended six weeks later with the surrender of Mexican General Martín Perfecto de Cos. Though later defeated at the Alamo, the Texans were victorious at the Battle of San Jacinto, the deciding encounter that resulted in Texas winning its independence from Mexico in April 1836.

Lower Left: Captain Richard Andrews was the only Texan killed at the Battle of Concepción and the first Texan to die in the Texas Revolution. A marker honoring him was erected in nearby Concepción Park. His grandnephew, C.J. Andrews, is seen with the marker in 1932.
