Charlotte in Eaton County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Eaton County's 1845 Courthouse
Completed in 1846 for $1,000, the building was originally located on town square, the current location of the 1885 Courthouse Museum. It served as Eaton County's Courthouse until 1872, at which time it was sold and used as the Episcopal Chapel. The building has also been used as a livery stable and blacksmiths shop among many other things.
Historic Charlotte Inc. purchased the building, and on October 11, 1983, moved it to its current site. One of the earliest and few remaining original courthouses in Michigan, it is a piece of pioneer history. Twenty-seven organizations along with a few very dedicated volunteers made the purchase, move and preservation possible. Courthouse Square Association is forever grateful for all their efforts.
