Inscription.
On November 1, 1968 at Fire Support Base Rita Republic of Vietnam
1SGT Whitaker was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross
for heriocally defending this M109 Howitzer and
the Fire Support Base against an overwhelming enemy force of
sappers armed with satchel charges & rifle propelled grenades.
While this howitzer was destroyed before
1SGT Whitaker could save it he was successful in killing
other sappers and saving 5 other howitzers from destruction.
Dedicated by the Men of C Battery 8th 6th Artillery.
