Hij was raadspensionaris van de provincie Holland. Tijdens het koningschap van Willem III en diens verblijf in Engeland was hij zijn trouwe en bekwame zaakwaarnemer in de Republiek.

(English translation:)

He was council pensionary of the province of Holland. During the reign of William III and his stay in England, he was his loyal and competent agent in the Republic.

Excerpt on his role as Grand Pensionary: He became Grand Pensionary of the States of Holland, and thereby the most powerful man in the Estates-General of the Netherlands, on 27 May 1689, when William III became king of England and had to move to London. He was the confidant and correspondent of William, who left the guidance of Dutch affairs largely in his hands.
