More about this marker. Despite what the marker says, the site it marks is NOT the location of Charlesfort. It is actually the location of Santa Elena, a Spanish fort. The location of Charlesfort is about 100 yards to the north of the monument. Charlesfort, however, was the first French settlement in the United States. It was also the first settlement from any nation that was founded as a haven for religious persecution.
