Cal Hubbard, at 6-2 and 250 pounds, by the standards of the 1920s, was huge. Still, he could run the 100-yard dash in close to 11 seconds. It was an awesome combination for a tackle – size and speed. In 1929, at his request, Cal was traded to Green Bay where he liked the smalltown atmosphere. Packers’ coach Earl (Curly) Lambeau moved the versatile Hubbard to the tackle spot. The Packers won NFL championships three straight years – 1929, 1930, and 1931. Cal enjoyed his best years with the Packers from 1929-1933 and 1935. During that time, he earned first-team all-league honors as a guard in 1929 and at tackle in 1931, 1932, and 1933.

3. Cal Hubbard, Umpire - National Baseball Hall of Fame.
By 1936, Hubbard was already moving on to a new career as an American League umpire. Hubbard’s extraordinary vision, often speculated to be at 20/10 level, and made him an excellent judge of balls and strikes. Furthermore, while Hubbard’s imposing size made him a tough man to intimidate, he was not quick to eject players. “The best umpire is one who can handle a difficult situation and keep players in the game,” Hubbard explained. “However, you’ve got to know the rules.” Indeed, Hubbard was revered by players,

managers and executives for his extensive knowledge of the rulebook. In 16 years as a big league umpire, Hubbard was selected to call four World Series and three All-Star games.

He was among the initial class of inductees to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963 and was voted the greatest tackle of the NFL's first fifty years in 1969. After his football career wound down, he started umpiring in baseball's Minor Leagues and reached the majors as an umpire in the American League in 1936. From 1936 to 1951, he was recognized as one of the game's best officials and officiated the World Series in 1938, 1942, 1946 and 1949; and the All-Star Games in 1939, 1944 and 1949. He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
