1. Senator Richard Shelby Marker
Inscription. Senator Richard Shelby, attorney and businessman, has been a public servant much of his life. He began his political career as a state senator representing Tuscaloosa in 1970. He served 8 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986. He is noted for his service on the Senate Appropriations, Intelligence, Banking, Housing, Urban Affairs and Aging Committees.

Senator Shelby has also been instrumental in acquiring funding for major research facilities for The University of Alabama System and Auburn University. These facilities are named for him and his wife, Dr. Annette N. Shelby.

The Downtown Tuscaloosa Urban Renewal Redevelopment Project was made possible through support and efforts of Senator Shelby.
