Willem van Oranje 1533-1584
Stadhouder van Holland, Zeeland en Utrecht en leider van de opstand tegen de Spaanse machthebbers in de 16e eeuw. Zijn bijnaam was Willem de Zwijger en hij wordt ook wel 'Vader des Vaderlands' genoemd. Na de moord door Balthasar Gerards is hij begraven in een praalgraf in de Nieuwe Kerk van Delft, waar sindsdien alle Oranjes begraven worden.
Stadholder of Holland, Zeeland and Utrecht and leader of the revolt against the Spanish rulers in the 16th century. His nickname was Willem de Zwijger (William the Silent) and he is also called Vader des Vaderlands (Father of the Fatherland). After his murder by Balthasar Gerards, he was buried in a mausoleum in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft, where all members of the house of Orange have been buried ever since.

Overview: William the Silent (24 April 1533 10 July 1584), also known as William the Taciturn (translated from Dutch: Willem de Zwijger), or, more commonly in the Netherlands, William of Orange (Dutch: Willem van Oranje), was the main leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs that set off the Eighty Years' War (15681648) and resulted in the formal independence of the United Provinces in 1648. Born into the House of Nassau, he became Prince of Orange in 1544 and is thereby the founder of the Orange-Nassau branch and the ancestor of the monarchy of the Netherlands.
