Eureka Township in Greenville in Montcalm County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
On This Site - Origins
When John Green arrived to the area in 1844, he built a simple home for his family on the banks of the Flat River near where you are currently standing. He purchased most of the land west of what is now Lafayette St. and built the area's first sawmill near where Franklin St. now crosses the river. The area grew quickly and in 1854 Greenville received its first charter as a village and reached a population of 1,000 shortly thereafter.
The J.S Crosby mill was located in what is now Tower Riverside Park. This mill was constructed in 1881 and was in operation until 1900. Horses were used to haul the finished lumber from the mill across the Flat River on a tramway. The foundation of the barn used to house these horses serves as the foundation of the museum today.
