Lafayette Street
The 200 block of Lafayette Street, both east and west sides to the north can be seen in this photo dated around 1890. The street is bustling with horse and carriage activity. Banners hang overhead possibly to signity a celebration. Lafayette Street remained a dirt street until 1910 when was first paved with bricks.
This same street view of the 200 block section of Lafayette Street can be seen in this photo taken in the 1940s. Many of the buildings in this block were built in the 1870s and 1880s for early Greenville businessmen such as J.J. Shearer E.F. Grabill, John Lewis, and M.H. Norton who were influential in many aspects of Greenville's development
The first movie house in Greenville, the Marguerite Vaudette, was located in the First State Bank Building, built in 1870. New ownership and management caused the theater to change names several times. In 1913, the Favorite Theater nickelodeon shown here was located on the first floor at 301 South Lafayette Street and showed motion pictures for 5 cents admission.
