The El Dorado County Veterans Monument was first envisioned by former United States Marine, Richard W. Buchanan, during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Navy Cross for upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Services. On May 24, 1968, as 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines moved against well-entrenched enemy forces during the Battle of Le Bac (1), Buchanan witnessed numerous examples of the American fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty by his fellow Marines and Corpsmen. He vowed that their dedication, and the dedication and sacrifices of other men and women of our Armed Forces, would not be forgotten. Dedicated November 11, 2006. [Center Marker:] Dedicated In Memory Of the 2,335 members of the U.S. Military Forces Killed in Action On That Day Of Infamy December 7, 1941 During The Bombing and Strafing Attack Of The Islands Of Oahu Territory of Hawaii Dedicated By The El Dorado County Hangtown 30 Chapter Of The Pearl Harbor Survivors On this 45th Anniversary Year of 1986 Remember Pearl Harbor Keep America Alert. [Upper Right:] U.S.S. Missouri Latitude 35º 21’17” North – Longitude 139º 45’ 36” East. Over this spot on 2 September 1945 the Instrument of Formal Surrender of Japan to the Allied Powers was Signed.
