Haut lieu de la gastronomie et du commerce d'alimentation depuis le XIIe siècle, cette rue marquait le terme du voyage de la marée des ports du Nord, notamment les huîtres dont le marché a été recouvert par la rue Etienne-Marcel. Au 59 s'élevait de 1794 à 1845 le restaurant "Au rocher de Cancale", célèbre pour ses fruits de mer, immortalisé dans la "Comédie Humaine" et fréquenté par Balzac, Alexandre Dumas, Théophile Cautier, Eugène Sue. Au 61-63, le traiteur "Au Rocher d'Etretat" tenait le bureau de vente de la Société des huîtres d'Etretat et de Dieppe; celles de Fécamp étaient vendues près de la rue Tiquetonne. La cour de l'auberge "Le Compas d'Or" abritait le hangar des diligences à destination de Dreux.
Mecca of gastronomy and the food trade since the 12th century, this street marked the end of the journey of the tide of the ports of the North, particularly for the oysters whose market was on the street of Etienne-Marcel. At No. 59 stood from 1794 to 1845 the restaurant "Au Rocher de Cancale", famous for its seafood, immortalized by Balzac in the "Comédie Humaine", and frequented by Balzac, Alexandre Dumas, Théophile Cautier, and Eugène Sue. At No. 61-63, the caterer "Au Rocher d'Etretat" held the sales office of the Société des huîtres d'Etretat et de Dieppe; those of Fécamp were sold near the rue Tiquetonne. The courtyard of the "Le Compas d'Or" inn housed the shed for stagecoaches bound for Dreux.

Excerpt on Balzac: “Ah, to find Paris again! Do you know what that means, dear Parisians? It is to find… the cuisine of the Rocher de Cancale, as prepared by Borel for gourmets so lucky to appreciate it, for it only exists on Rue Montorgueil.” So reads Balzac’s 1843 novel Honorine, part of his sprawling masterpiece, La Comédie humaine.
