1. Old Church Museum Marker

Inscription. Formerly the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Slavery issue split church into Methodist Episcopal Church North and South. This church was built with a separate slave gallery that was removed during renovation in 1970's. Rondels on eastern wall of sanctuary are from St. Patrick's Church in Maysville. They depict four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Regarding Old Church Museum. Rev. Benjamin Ogden organized Washington United Methodist Church in 1786. Circuit-riding preachers ministered to the congregation in private homes and at the courthouse until 1818, when a log church was built. A stone church at Main and York streets was constructed in 1826. When the issue of slavery split the national church in 1845, the Washington congregation voted to side with

the South. The church reorganized as Washington Methodist Episcopal Church South, and built this building in 1848. This was the congregation's home until 1969, when it reorganized as Washington United Methodist Church and moved into a new church building. Washington UMC merged with Central United Methodist Church to form Washington Central United Methodist Church in 2022 — ironically as the national church is splitting again, this time primarily over LGBTQ issues.
