1. The Forty-Ninth Parallel Marker
Inscription.
At this point the 49th parallel of latitude north of the equator crosses the highway. This line forms the southern boundary of the western provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and most of British Columbia. In 1818 a treaty between Great Britain and the United States designated it as the international boundary from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. Further west in the Oregon Territory a bitter dispute arose which almost precipitated war between these two nations before they agreed, in 1846, to extend the boundary to the shore of the Pacific along this parallel.

1. Convention of 1818. The Canadian Encyclopedia website entry:
The Convention of 1818 was a treaty between the United States and Britain that set the 49th parallel of latitude as the boundary between British North America and the US across the West. This remains the boundary today between the two nations. The area west of the Rocky Mountains was to be "free and open" to either Britain or the U.S. for the next 10 years. In 1827, this period was indefinitely extended, but it was ultimately terminated by the 1846 Oregon Treaty.

2. 1846 Oregon Treaty. Wikipedia entry:
The Treaty of 1818 set the boundary between the United States and British North America along the 49th parallel of north latitude from Minnesota to the Rocky Mountains. The region west of those mountains was known to the Americans as the Oregon Country and to the British as the Columbia Department or Columbia District of the Hudson's Bay Company.

Joint control steadily grew less tolerable for both sides. After a British minister rejected the offer of U.S. Presidents James K. Polk and John Tyler to settle the boundary at the 49th parallel north, American expansionists called for the annexation of the entire region up to Parallel 54°40′ north, the southern limit of Russian America as established by parallel treaties between the Russian Empire and the United States (1824) and Britain (1825). However, after the outbreak of the Mexican–American War in April 1846 diverted U.S. attention and military resources, a compromise was reached and the matter was settled by the Polk administration to avoid a two-war situation, and another war with the formidable military strength of Great Britain.

3. Oregon Treaty, 1846. Oregon Encyclopedia website entry:
Signed in Washington, D.C., on June 15, the Oregon Treaty ended a “Joint Occupancy” of twenty-eight years over an expansive region that stretched from present-day southeast Alaska to the Rocky Mountains on the east and the 42nd parallel on the south. It settled the Oregon Question, the resolution of which portions of the territory each nation could rightfully claim, and it set the 49th parallel as the northern limit of American sovereignty in the Pacific Northwest.
