English translation

Dutch surgeon and VOC ( Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, Dutch East India Company) employee. In 1636 he became a junior merchant with the VOC, but was dismissed because of private trade. He returned to service in 1651 and, as senior merchant, founded the first European colony in South Africa in 1652: Fort de Goede Hoop, near the Cape of the same name. In doing so, he played a central role in the early colonial rule of South Africa, where he remains a well-known and highly controversial historical figure.
