Nederlands ontdekkingsreiziger in dienst van de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie. Hij is bekend geworden door zijn zeereizen tussen 1642 en 1644, georganiseerd door Antonio van Diemen, waarbij hij Tasmaniλ en Nieuw-Zeeland heeft ontdekt.

Abel Janszoon Tasman was a Dutch explorer in the service of the Dutch East India Company. He is known for his sea voyages between 1642 and 1644, organized by Antonio van Diemen, during which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand.

Overview: Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603 – 10 October 1659) was a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant, best known for his voyages of 1642 and 1644 in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He was the first known European explorer to reach New Zealand and the islands of Fiji and Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania).
