Inscription.
[east side] Glenn Gould is the iconic Canadian and internationally renowned piano virtuoso who revolutionized the way the world listens to the classics. Born in Toronto in 1932, Gould had perfect pitch at age 3, and appeared with the Toronto Symphony at 14 to rave reviews. Over the next decade and a half, acclaim for his amazing genius spread world-wide. He continued to transform the world of classical music by embracing the recording studio medium. He also produced dozens of film and television programs for CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation).

Equally famous for his eccentricities, (the heavy overcoat, scarves, fingerless gloves and cap, his hypochondria and aversion to live performance), Gould's diversions led him North to Algoma. Few realize that Wawa was a favourite haunt of Glenn Gould, for this was the place that he loved to escape, his beloved North.

He drove alone to Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa staying always in the same room at the same hotel: Room 102 at The Wawa Motor Inn. It appears he was rarely recognized by Wawa locals, even during the peak of his fame in the late 1960's early 70's. There are a small

number of residents today that remember their rare and fleeting interactions with this unique Canadian personality. The odd attire and unconventional style that made him so recognizable elsewhere drew little attention in Wawa. Perhaps this was part of the charm of Wawa for Mr. Gould; a place where he retreated to enjoy the solitude and beauty, restore his soul and revitalize his creative muse, all in virtual anonymity!

[west side] Glenn Gould loved Wawa and the unique character and vistas found here on Lake Superior and Michipicoten Harbour. In a CBC documentary produced in 1968, Glenn is filmed enjoying some of his favourite Wawa sites at Michipicoten Harbour, Sandy Beach, Scenic High Falls and Silver Falls.

He states that Wawa "is an extraordinary place. I've been coming here for 4 or 5 years now to sort out some thoughts and try to get some writing done. Something very strange happened to me the first time I was up here. I was away for about 2 weeks… away from Toronto, and away from cities, and away from city living and city thinking and I did I think the best writing of my entire life at that time and I decided that it was the sort

of therapy I needed and I've been coming back for more of the same ever since and it hasn't let me down yet. It is an extraordinary spot."

Glenn Gould died suddenly at the age of 50 in October, 1982. His legacy to the music world continues to be memorialized and celebrated in many countries and in many ways. With the cooperation of the Glenn Gould Estate, Wawa's Heritage Doors are just one small way for the residents of Wawa to recognize Glenn Gould as a part of our rich history and to welcome visitors who continue to follow in the footsteps of this extraordinary Canadian.

Canadian Glenn Gould was one of the most famous and celebrated pianists of the 20th century and was renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Gould's playing was distinguished by remarkable technical proficiency and a capacity to articulate the contrapuntal texture of Bach's music. Gould was also a writer, broadcaster, composer and conductor. He was a prolific contributor to musical journals, in which he discussed music theory and outlined his musical philosophy. He performed on television and radio, and produced three musique concrθte radio documentaries, the Solitude Trilogy, about isolated areas of Canada. Gould could play a vast repertoire of piano music, as well as a wide range of orchestral and operatic transcriptions, from memory. He could "memorize at sight" and once challenged a friend to name any piece of music that he could not "instantly play from memory".
