1. Gulfport Army Airfield Marker
Inscription. On July 7, 1942, the United States Army Air Force opened the Gulfport Army Airfield to train personnel for the B-29 Superfortress, B-17 Flying Fortress, and B-24 Liberator during World War II. The Gulfport Field was conveyed from the War Department to the City of Gulfport in 1949 for use as a civil airport. Southern Airways and National Airlines began passenger service to Gulfport in the early 1950’s.
