[English] Founded in 1939 by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) was one of the earliest ballet companies in Canada and the first to achieve professional status. It successfully adapted classical ballet to the national context by creating an eclectic and accessible repertoire that incorporated Canadian themes. With its national tours beginning in the 1950s, the company fostered an appreciation for ballet across the country. Under the leadership of artistic director Arnold Spohr, the RWB rose to international fame through the 1960s to become one of North America’s most widely travelled dance companies.

1. Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was granted its royal title in 1953, the first granted under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It completed its first American tour in 1954. The company solidified its reputation under the artistic directorship of Saskatchewan-born Arnold Spohr from 1958 to 1988. Spohr, who first joined the company as a dancer in 1945. The company spends 20 or more weeks a year on the road, presenting more than 100 performances every year in both large and small centres.

2. Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) is the second-oldest ballet company in North America and the oldest surviving dance company in Canada. The RWB was first organized as a ballet club in 1938 by 2 immigrant English dance teachers, Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally, who had moved to Canada at the invitation of friends. The club made its public debut
