The Iron Master was hired by the furnace owners to manage the original construction of the furnace and all related smelting operations. A good Iron Master had many skills including experience as a mechanical engineer, market analyst, personnel director, bill collector and purchasing agent.

Company Clerk
The company clerk's position was vital to operations. He kept the company's records, managed the company store, and made decisions at the furnace in the absence of the Iron Master. He was the highest paid employee in the operation after the iron master.
