in 1254 by Lanfranco Settala, prior general of the Augustinian Hermits, possibly incorporating an earlier structure dedicated to Saint Mark to thank the Venetians for helping Milan in its struggle against Frederick I Barbarossa. The 13th-century building, with a T- shaped floor plan and three aisles, was modified in the 15th century with the addition of new chapels on the south side. The interior, radically remodelled in the Baroque style between 1690 and 1714, boasts some important works of art and sculpture (13th-17th centuries). All that remains of the Gothic building are the bell tower and part of the south transept. The façade, designed by Maciachini in 1871, retains the ancient splayed doorway and three 14th-century statues of saints. The young Mozart stayed in the manse for three months and Giovanni Battista Sammartini was the church organist. On 22 May 1874 Verdi conducted his Requiem here to mark the first anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni.
