SS Peter and Paul High School
This flag pole stood in front of Memorial Hall.
Foundation stones and sandstone from the front entrance of the high school building form the bench supports.
The bricks for the planter are original bricks from the building which served as a Catholic school at 211 West, Fourth Street from 1866 to 1967. SS Peter and Paul High School dates from 1945.
This is our school--how many stories it could tell if only it could talk! Deep within its brick walls, its wooden floors, its high ceilings are buried the sounds of merry laughter, of profound recitations, of gay repartee. On its walls and furniture are the stains of the years--water guns, colored chalk, pencil marks, the neatly carved initials of amorous young couples. Yes, our school is aged; it's water-stained; it's carven and chiseled, but it's ours--and we love it. If, in the future we see men razing the dear old building that a new, more modern one may sing up in its place, we shall be sad, and wonder how any other walls--no matter how shiny, how convenient, how beautiful--can ever be as welcoming, as sheltering, as warmly embracing as the dear brick arms of the old SS. Peter and Paul's.
