Inscription. The Missouri Botanical Garden became a renowned breeding center for tropical waterlilies through the efforts of George H. Pring, a leading horticulturist and Superintendent of the Garden from 1906 to 1963. Using mostly six African species and one old cultivated hybrid, Pring carried out a complex series of crosses that yielded several popular hybrid cultivars. Pring's detailed notes enabled us to know the ancestry of most of his hybrids.
