The current name of this institution is Central Children’s Home of North Carolina. It was founded in 1883 as the Colored Orphanage Association by members of the Shiloh and Wake Missionary Baptist Associations and the home was named the Grant Colored Asylum. Other names it had were The Colored Orphanage Asylum of North Carolina, The Colored Orphanage of North Carolina, and The Central Orphanage of North Carolina.

The Central Children’s Home of North Carolina is on the National Register of Historic Places.
