1. Provine Chapel Marker
Inscription. Mississippi College's oldest building, Provine Chapel, opened in 1860 and early during the Civil War was transformed into a hospital for the wounded troops of Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Originally known as the Chapel, the building's ground floor was believed to have served as a stable for his horses. For decades, the chapel was utilized for college classrooms and worship services, and was the site of Clinton Baptist Church services until 1923. The chapel's name was changed in 1968 to honor one of Mississippi College's early leaders, President John William Provine, a natural science professor who served as president from 1897-98 and 1911-32. The venerable building marked its 150th anniversary with a series of concerts in 2009.

This memorial plaque was made possible by the generous gift of Mr. L.D. Jordan, Class of 1951.

Erected by Mississippi College.
