Inscription. Built in 1927 by the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad, this freight depot served various railroads, including the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, until 1972, when rail operations ceased. The Merchants Company, a wholesale grocer, leased the building from the State of Mississippi for a number of years. In 1985, Hal & Mal's, a restaurant and entertainment venue, opened here. Over the years, numerous cultural, entertainment, and political figures dined or performed at Hal & Mal's, including Eudora Welty, Willie Morris, and B.B. King.
