Georgetown in El Dorado County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
Growlersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9241
Inscription.
Built circa 1850, originally two separate buildings, it housed many businesses during the Gold Rush era including hardware and furniture stores. It survived five, 19th century fires, including an 1897 conflagration that destroyed all but the brick buildings on this side of the street. In the 1870s, Alessandro A. Fransioli (Alexander Francis) purchased it and rented it out until his death in 1902, when his sons took over his businesses in town. Sometime in the early 20th century Sartor Francis moved the family butcher shop to this location. After his death, these buildings were sold to the Growlersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9241 in 1952. Post 9241 was established on April 12, 1947 after WWII veterans returned to the divide. It has been home to combat Veterans of every American foreign conflict from the Spanish American War to the Present. The ballroom and front of the building were restored by the Native Sons of the Golden West, Georgetown Parlor 91, whose mission is to perpetuate the memories of the days of '49, and to preserve and celebrate the history of California.
