Rochester in Oakland County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
1947-1957
1952 As the population in the Rochester area grew, a change in the organization of local schools became necessary. A special election in December 1952 consolidated the rural school districts of Brooklands, Stony Creek, Mt. Vernon, Snell, Bigler, Baldwin and Brush with the Rochester District and created a new district called Rochester Community Schools. The new district encompassed fifty-six square miles and had an enrollment of 2,500 students.
The consolidation also put enormous pressure on the new district for more elementary buildings and a new high school. A $1.8 million bond issue to fund one elementary school, additions to two others, and a new high school campus, passed in early 1954. As a result, North Hill Elementary School and a new Rochester High School were built. This allowed the former high school building at University and Wilcox to be converted for use by the junior high grades. The building has long since served as the district's administration center.
