Inscription.
An entire tractate of the Mishnah is named "Miqva'ot" (ritual purification baths), and is devoted to laws related to these installations, such as the conditions needed to render them ritually valid and technical details concerning their operation.
In recent generations, the written sources have been augmented by the discovery of hundreds of Second Temple- era purification baths in Jerusalem and throughout the country, showing how common these installations once were. Many particularly large mikveh installations were found hewn in the bedrock surrounding the Temple Mount. These served the pilgrims who visited the city and the Temple.
