Inscription.
"Purity has spread in Israel". Babylonian Talmud, Shabbath, 13a. Preserving physical purity has been a hallmark of Jewish religion since ancient times. The Bible mentions various states of ritual impurity and commands a life of purity. Beginning in Second Temple times, bathing for purposes of ritual purification was called "immersion." At that time, especially during the Hasmonean period (beginning from second century BCE), people became very strict about maintaining ritual purity, and detailed laws were formulated to enable a daily practice of the biblical commandments. For this, a special water installation, designated for ritual purification, was put into use - the mikveh., (Hebrew text not transcribed)
