1. Architectural elements from the Jewish Quarter Marker
Inscription. In the course of the reconstruction of the Jewish Quarter the 1970s, archaeological finds dated to different periods include numerous architectural elements. These were found throughout the Jewish Quarter in secondary use in later structures, and amid the rubble. Among them are bases, columns, capitals and other items. Most of the elements are of local limestone or imported marble carefully crafted by skilled stonemasons. The decorative motifs on these objects follow the architectural traditions of the periods to which they belong, allowing us to date them. These stone elements are indicative of the splendor of the public, private and religious buildings that stood in the Jewish Quarter and reflect the luxurious architecture of Jerusalem in ancient times.
