Blackwood in Gloucester Township in Camden County, New Jersey — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
First Presbyterian Church of Blackwood
Inscription.
Incorporated 1695
Camden County, N.J.
This monument represents the establishment of the first church in Gloucester Township. The land on which this church stands was purchased from John Blackwood, the area's largest landowner. The founding fathers of the First Presbyterian Church of Blackwoodtown erected a log meeting house in 1751 which stood until 1801. The congregation soon outgrew the log meeting house and a new church was built in 1848 directly behind the present edifice. This building served the people until 1856 when additional land was purchased and a stone structure was erected in 1861 that makes up part of the present church's front.
Special tributes should go to Major Peter Cheeseman, Mr. Benjamin Chestnut, and Mr. John Blackwood for their leadership in the establishment of the existing church.
Erected by Gloucester Township [Camden County].
