David L. Powers arrived in Jonesville to engage in the business of selling men's and boys clothing. David's father operated a store in Herricksville, Butler Township and he had brothers operating clothing stores in Union city and Sturgis. The year was 1890 and the Chicago Pike--Sauk Trail--was nothing more than a dirt trail.(Submitted on April 12, 2023, by J.T. Lambrou of New Boston, Michigan.)
The first 4 or 5 years of operation he moved several times within the business block until settling on the location of the store today. At the young age of 21, Ralph M. Powers was made a partner. Over the next 40 years, the store weathered two World Wars and a Great Depression. During this time, it was a father-and-son operation known as D.L. Powers & Son.
