1. Cotton Gin Marker

Inscription. This c. 1850 building once stood north of the Saluda River in the Dutch Forks Pineridge area. Turned by one or two mules or horses, the wooden gears underneath powered the saw-toothed gin upstairs to extract seed from raw cotton. Working eight hours, this cotton engine (i.e., "gin") could clean 400 lbs. of cotton, the standard weight of one bale in the 1850s. Relocated here in 1970, damaged in the 1994 tornado, restored in 1995.
