Who Fought For The United States Here?
The American army you would have seen here was surprisingly diverse. Most men and boys had volunteered. Some were drafted. Enslaved men and boys could be forced to join. The average soldier had served in at least one prior military campaign. Most of the enemy had not.
You could have seen Americans-African, European, and Native-in the ranks, side by side. The American Revolution saw the last racially integrated United States Army until the 1950s. Included in this were the new nation's first allies, the Oneida. They recognized American independence on September 16, 1777.
Over 6,100 United States Continental soldiers from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Canada were here. By the end of the campaign, they had been joined by over 10,000 militia from the surrounding states.
