Inscription. Come tour this 16-bedroom house moved from China and re-erected in Salem.

During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), a prosperous Chinese merchant from Anhui Province built a stately sixteen-bedroom house in China's southeastern Huizhou region, calling his home Yin Yu Tang, translated as "Hall of Plentiful Shelter." It was home to the Huang family for more than two hundred years.

Representing Chinese culture from the 1790s to the 1980s, Yin Yu Tang reveals the Huizhou region's unique architectural style as well as diverse cultural changes that occurred in China throughout the home's occupancy. Relocated from its original location in China in 1997, the house was transformed from a multigenerational family residence to an historic house in a museum setting at PEM. Yin Yu Tang has been interpreted as it appeared when the Huang family last occupied it in 1982, allowing visitors to gain rare perspectives into Chinese art, architecture and culture through the history of the house, its owners and objects.

Yin Yu Tang is available for scheduled self- guided, audio and guide-led tours. Inquire inside with PEM staff for times and availability. The frequency and size of tours are limited to optimize visitor experience and protect the historic structure.
