"General" Johnson devoted his life to public service and turned the family business of Johnson & Johnson into one of the largest healthcare corporations in the world. The title by which most knew him – General – grew out of his service as a brigadier general in World War II. He also served as chairman of the board of the Smaller War Plants Corporation, regulating wartime production of military goods and defense items in smaller plants and businesses throughout the U.S. economy.
