Gunnery Sergeant Basilone left the Army to serve as a Marine during World War II. He was the only enlisted marine during that conflict to receive the Medal Honor, Navy Cross, and Purple Heart. While defending Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, he commanded two sections of machine guns against a superior enemy force for two days until opposing forces had been annihilated. Sgt. Basilone was one of 6,821 Americans killed during the invasion Iwo Jima.
