Regarding King Tackie Tawiah I. King Tackie Tawiah I was a long-serving leader (1862-1902) of the Ga-Dangme people of what is now Ghana's eastern coast. He was known as an astute military and social leader. His reign covered the period of British colonialism where he nimbly negotiated between exploiting the relationship for increased trade and business, while at times disagreeing with colonial policy. He was imprisoned by the British for three years for refusing to assist in attacking other ethnic groups. He saw Accra turn into the capital of the Gold Coast under the British and many other technological changes. He is widely regarded as a wise and powerful leader of pre-independence Ghana.
