Lone Pine in Inyo County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
Alabama Hills
One of Hollywood's Favorite Places to Film
Scenic Alabama Hills has been one of Hollywood's favorite movie locations since 1920. Explore this wonderland of boulders and mountain vistas and find the sites where more than three hundred films have been shot. Film and television buffs may recognize the backdrop scenes from Hopalong Cassidy, High Sierra, Gunga Din, The Great Race, Maverick, The Lone Ranger, Star Trek, and others. The industry continues to shoot movies, commercials, and stills on location in this jumbled landscape below the towering Sierra.
The movie heritage is usually celebrated every October at the Lone Fine Film Festival. Festival goers can watch movies that were made in the Lone Pine area, tour the locations where the films were made, and meet some of the stars who worked here. For more information contact the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce.
As you drive through the Alabama Hills, your help is needed to preserve this special place. Please protect the scenery and vegetation by remaining on established roads.
