Regarding The John Alexander Austin House. Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
The house stands today at 290 South Front Street as the sole surviving residential structure in the South Bluffs area of Downtown Memphis – an area once considered to be one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in the city. The structure is significant in its association with John Alexander Austin (1842-1906), who was an important, longtime manufacturer and retailer of men's clothing in the region. The Austin House is a rare and important local example of the Italianate townhouses that once graced a major portion of the Downtown and Medical Center areas of the city.
