Hemphill in Sabine County, Texas — The American South (West South Central)
William F. and Bertha Sutor Goodrich House
Inscription.
The son of an early Sabine County family,
William Franklin Goodrich graduated in the
first class of the University of Texas Law
School in 1886. The next year, he wed Bertha
Sutor of Travis County and returned to
Hemphill, where he was a lawyer, county
attorney and abstractor. After buying this lot
in 1889, the couple built their home circa 1894.
The transitional style house features Queen
Anne details, including conical turret,
wrapped porch, dormer windows, and hipped
and gabled rooflines. It remained in the
Goodrich family for many years.
