Charles F. Maw
(1883-1970)
The town of Brighton, VT., dedicates this plaque to the memory of one of its prominent public officials, Charles F. Maw, who was born in Nettleham, Lincolnshire, England in 1883.
With only an 8th grade education, Charles F. Maw emigrated to Canada in 1905 and after briefly working on various farms and in forestry, he began work with the Grand Trunk Railroad in 1910 in Richmond, QC, and then in Coteau Junction, QC. In 1923, he was promoted to Gtr. Locomotive Foreman and together with his wife Ada and two daughters, Dorothy and Mildred, he transferred to Island Pond, VT. A first daughter Winnifred (1909-1918) is buried in Richmond, QC. A fourth daughter, Muriel Maw O'Gorman was born in Island Pond, VT., where Mr. Maw remained as locomotive foreman until his retirement in 1953.
Mr. Maw was active in numerous civic positions within this town. he served on Brighton Select Board for 37 years (1933-1970), and as president of the local YMCA board, town health officer, cemetery commissioner, lay minister of the Episcopal Christ Church, Grand Master of the local Oddfellows (I.O.O.F) Lodge, Judge, Civic Defense chairman, president of the Island Pond Board of Trade, and was involved in many local community programs and activities. Mr. Maw was also the primary driving force behind the creation of the road around the lake known today as Lakeshore Drive. Mr. Maw passed away in Brighton in 1970 and is interred at Lakeside Cemetery.
It is with great honor that the town of Brighton recognizes Mr. Maw's contributions and his dedicated public service to the successful growth of this community.
