Educator Innovator
— Psychologist Minister Mentor Friend —
Senior minister of First Community Church 1935-1956. Pioneered an innovative philosophy known as the "full guidance ministry" to serve the congregation through all the seasons of life. He gained national prominence as a religious leader and was widely sought after as a speaker at college, business and religious seminars.
Burkie, as he was known to all, developed the very strong youth ministry which continues today. Camp Akita, originally a gift to him, was given to the church and continues to play a major role in the life of the church.
First Community Village is his vision of a retirement community which is not only a place to live but a way of life.
His influence lives on in the hearts of those to whom he gave inspiration, guidance and hope.
