Nipigon in Thunder Bay District, Ontario — Central Canada (North America)
Hudson's Bay Company
With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, trading and commerce began to shift away from the river to the railway due to increased efficiency and cost competitiveness. By 1898, Hudson Bay Company replaced the river post with a new store and warehouse near the CPR station. Shortly after the buildings were repaired, and repainted, a fire in 1924 destroyed the frame structure, and the manager's house. A solid brick establishment was built on the foundations. The store was later known as The Bay and The Northern. On January 24, 1999, after serving the people of the Nipigon area for nearly 150 years, The Hudson's Bay Company closed its doors.
