1. 114 S. Front Street Marker
Inscription. Built in 1817 by steamboat captain and boat owner Daniel Brown. This building has a long and interesting history. Rumors and suspicions abounded that Captain Brown counterfeited United States Bank notes. While in New Orleans he was arrested and imprisoned. He died before he could go to trial.

From 1817-1844 the second floor served as the first home of the Masonic Lodge. It was also used for balls, other club meetings and by the Tippecanoe Club of 1840 (to elect William Henry Harrison President).

In the 1820's Colonel S.S. Scott operated the Commodore Perry Inn. Off and on over the course of history the three-story building has been used as a hotel (known as the Empire House) or as an apartment building.
