Inscription. John Fulton and his wife, along with their sons Samuel and Thomas and families, became the first to settle in what would become Rising Sun in 1798. Thomas Fulton, cousin to Robert Fulton of steamboat fame, built this log house.

John Lanius purchased the building in 1819 from John James, founder of Rising Sun. John Lanius used the structure as his residence and hat shop. When Andrew Jackson took office as President in 1828, he appointed John Lanius postmaster.

This building was one of the early post offices in Rising Sun. The first post office of Rising Sun was established on September 15, 1815 with Caleb A. Craft appointed as postmaster. It is one of the few log structures still standing in Rising Sun.
