Inscription.
This is purported to be the second oldest house in Key West. Originally built as a two-room dwelling in 1834 by English merchant captain George Carey, who made his fortune in the wholesale liquor business, the home was enlarged in 1844 as a gift to his new wife. It was renovated in 1934 by Jesse Porter Kirke Newton, a fifth generation Key Wester, who was instrumental in the historic preservation of Key West.
