Regarding Captain Isidore Newman. Captain Newman was a British Secret Agent who volunteered to spy for Britain against the Nazis. It was an extremely courageous and dangerous duty for two reasons. First, he was a spy for Britain. The second was because he was a Jew.

Jews volunteered and served disproportionally in the SOE and MI6. Their desire to help win the war effort and defeat the Nazis displayed heroism and focus that few volunteers matched.

"General Gubbins’s citation for Isidore’s MBE concludes: ‘For his courage

and devotion to duty during his two clandestine missions in Occupied

France, it is recommended that Captain Newman be appointed a Member of

the Order of the British Empire (Military Division)’. This was gazetted on

31 January 1946 and announced in the Jewish Chronicle on 2 February.

Isidore was also given a posthumous Mention in Despatches. The family

received several letters from members of Isidore’s French Resistance

colleagues, praising his work. An official War Office letter to the family

said: ‘I have known your son
